The Valley Isle
The pacific island of Maui is the second largest island in area of all the islands that make up the Hawaiian Islands and covers about 725 square miles.
Maui is part of the state of Hawaii and is also the largest island in Maui County which includes three other islands neighboring islands naemly Moloka, Lanai and the deserted Kahoolawe.
Maui has the third largest population in the Hawaiian islands after the more populated islands of Oahu and Hawaii. The only really large town on the island is Kahului and it is close to Wailuku which is the seat of Maui County. Kahului is also close to the main airport located on the North Shore of Maui
According to Hawaiian culture and history Maui got its’ name from a Polynesian navigator who first discovered the Hawaiian Islands. He named the island of Maui after his son who in turn had already been named after a demigod called Maui. According to previous legends this Maui demigod had personally raised all of the Hawaiian Islands out of the sea.
Maui is called the Valley Isle because of the large wide and fertile plain that exists between two ancient volcanoes in the west and eastern parts of the island. These are now known as the West Maui Mountains and in the east the dormant volcano of Haleakala.
