The main pacific island of Hawaii is called the Big Island or just Hawaii Island.
This is the island which gave its’ name to the whole Hawaiian chain of islands as it is the biggest in the group and then to the state of Hawaii. It is called the Big Island to avoid confusion with the state of Hawaii which includes all the Hawaiian slands
The Big Island has an area of just over 4000 square miles an it is the largest island in the United States and interestingly it is also larger than all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined.
Hawaii (the Big Island) is supposed to have been named after a legendary Polynesian navigator called Hawaiiloa who was the first to discover it.
There are other legends though that suggest the name comes from the legendary land of Hawaiki, which was one location from where the Polynesians originated and somewhere they go to in the after life.
The Big Island of Hawaii makes up the County of Hawaii which has its’ county seat in the town of Hilo.
